About Provo

Provo is located in central Utah between Oren and Springville. The area - now known as Provo – was originally called Timpanogos, which is a Numic word for “rock river.” In the mid-1800s, Mormon settlers arrived in the Salt Lake Valley and began trading with the Native Americans. Relations eventually soured between the Mormons and the Natives – and settlers began claiming more land. In 1849, 33 Mormon families established Fort Utah, which would be renamed Provo after a fierce war with the Timpanog tribe.
